We had a fierce storm last night and lost power for a little while. I live in a semi-rural area so it can take a while before the power company finds their way to our county. I knew we probably had a couple of hours to kill in the dark. So much for a relaxing evening watching Netflix.
My youngest, whose temporarily home while job hunting, received a Kindle for Christmas so she grabbed her new device and plopped down in the media room with me. I grabbed my Kindle and we set up a few candles and battery operated fairy lights to give the room a little ambiance. The shadows flickered off the walls and ceiling as our kitten, Midge, entertained us as she tried to catch them.
We didn't even really talk, but I enjoyed our time together. It was very relaxing. I find just being in the same room as my adult children is such a privilege. We don't have to be doing anything or even engaging in conversation, it's just the being that matters.
I'm lucky. I've enjoyed a lot of time with my adult children lately and I'm glad I'm taking advantage of their being home -- even if it's just for a little while. When they eventually leave, I'll know I didn't squander our days and hours together, but relished them. That will keep me going when I inevitably miss them.
Empty nesting won't be easy for me, but I'll adjust to the challenge and meet it head on. Just like we did when the lights flickered out last night.
